This experience is not for the faint-hearted. It will pull on your heartstrings to realise that these tunnels were occupied not that long ago.
We booked the trip through a small agent near our hotel because, for somewhere like this, we definitely wanted a tour guide. Some places you can wander around on your own, but the Cu Chi Tunnels really aren’t one of them.
The tunnels are about an hour’s drive from Saigon. We were picked up very early in the morning — apparently the best time to visit before the heat really kicks in. Still half asleep, we set off, and before long our guide began talking us through the history of the area. Vietnam had been occupied by the French for around 100 years. When the Americans came to assist the French, the conflict escalated into what became the Vietnam War.
The Ingenious Spirit of the Vietnamese People
What really struck me was learning that the Vietnamese people had very little in the way of weapons to defend themselves. Instead, they used ingenuity and sheer determination, building an underground world of tunnels to hide from the American army. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and explained everything in a way that made the history easier to understand — and much more real.
When we arrived at the Cu Chi Tunnels site, the scale of it all became even more shocking. Around 17,000 people lived in these tunnels. They stayed underground during the day and didn’t come out in daylight at all — meaning some people literally never saw the sun. This went on for 12 years. Babies were born underground, and for some children, daylight was something they didn’t experience for the first years of their lives.
To survive, people became incredibly resourceful. They collected undetonated bombs, removed the gunpowder, and used the metal to create traps, which were then hidden underground. Standing there, listening to this, it was hard not to feel completely humbled.
A Journey into the Tunnels
Later, we were given the chance to go into the tunnels ourselves, with options of 20, 40, or 100 metres. The guide warned us that even though the tunnels have been widened for tourists, they would be extremely hot — like a sauna. He wasn’t exaggerating. I made it down the steps, took one step inside… and that was enough for me. The heat, the darkness, and the confined space were overwhelming. I backed straight out.
Even that brief moment was enough to make it almost impossible to comprehend how people lived down there day after day, year after year.

Vietnam is an incredible country with such powerful history, and the Cu Chi Tunnels are a stark reminder of just how resilient and resourceful its people are. I’d highly recommend visiting — it’s not exactly an easy experience, but it’s one you’ll never forget.
