An Introduction to Joanne

One of my most memorable travel moments—and certainly the most heart-pounding—happened in Addo Elephant Park in South Africa. While driving through the reserve in a hire car, we hit a deep pothole, the sudden thud breaking the peace of the afternoon. A nearby bull elephant was clearly not impressed. He turned, flared his ears, and to our shock, charged towards us in a dramatic show of strength—only to stop short and retreat just as quickly. It was a powerful reminder that in the wild, we're on nature’s terms, and I’ve never forgotten the thrill (and mild terror) of that unforgettable encounter.

​Next on my travel wish list is a return to Asia, a region that continues to inspire and surprise me. I’m especially drawn to the beaches and temples of Thailand, with time in Chiang Mai to soak up its spiritual calm and mountain air. I’d love to explore more of the Philippines with its remote islands and clear blue seas, and delve deeper into Japan’s culture and countryside beyond the big cities. Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos are also high on the list—rich in history, scenery and soul, and perfect for a journey that combines adventure, reflection, and a few unforgettable meals along the way.

I never travel without a few trusted essentials: a notebook to capture those little moments and local tips, a good pair of walking shoes to keep me comfortable on any adventure, a lightweight scarf that’s surprisingly useful for everything from a blanket to a respectful cover-up, and of course, my camera to preserve the sights and stories that can’t be put into words. These items help me stay present and ready for whatever the journey brings, whether I'm wandering through busy markets or hiking in the hills, I like to travel prepared, with comfort, curiosity, and a sense of adventure always close at hand.
